Do I have leukemia?

Hi,
I'm concerned about a few symptoms I've been having of Leukemia but don't know if it is that or what to say to the doctor.
Symptoms include:
Frequent headaches
Frequent nosebleeds (I've had 7 in 5 days)
Extreme fatigue
Bone pain
Weakness across body
Chest pain
Nausea
Mouth ulcers
I've had this for a few months now but blood tests have never show anything but seen that sometimes it doesn't show in blood test as its bone marrow focused.
I don't know what to do and how to go about it.
Can I get some advice please?
  • Hello, so sorry you are going through this, but only your Doctors can diagnose you.  If it's any consolation, there are many illnesses that mimic the signs of cancer.  Please see your Doctor and be forceful with your concerns.  I know that this is often difficult, but sometimes we really have to fight to get our health concerns taken seriously.  Good luck.

  • Hi Sg147 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to read that you are worried about symptoms you are experiencing and can understand you wanting to find out more.

I'm afraid we are unable to diagnose or tell anyone if anything is the matter. While it’s possible that your symptoms are not related to cancer, it’s best to be safe and have yourself checked. Often symptoms are different, and due to different things, and are not actually related to each other. Try not to google symptoms, as this does not replace the advice of a doctor.

Only a doctor can make a medical assessment so the best thing to do is to go back and see your GP if your symptoms are not improving. They will assess you and decide whether you need to go for tests.

You may like to read the NHS guide to requesting a referral to a specialist.

Although Leukaemia begins in the bone marrow it will eventually lead to abnormal blood results, which is why it is more routinely picked up on blood tests.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    TIna

  • I hope you have insisted on a referral to a Haematologist. I had similar symptoms and was also losing my sight. It took eight months to finally get a diagnosis. I had to ask the GP twice for a referral and they only agreed because the ophthalmologist I was seeing told me to insist. I am now having my fourth cycle of chemo with stem cell transplant to follow.  I have Primary Intraocular CNS Lymphoma which is very rare apparently. I have no idea what the future holds but I am fighting it and hopeful of a successful outcome. Good luck and I hope your symptoms turn out not to be serious.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.

  • Hi there and thanks for getting in touch

It must be a worry to find out that some tests you have had done are abnormal and hopefully you will find out more today from your doctor about this.

Try not to over think things until you have all the information about what is going on. You haven't said what tests you have had done so far but it is possible the doctor may wish to carry our further tests, repeat bloods or refer you to the hospital if necessary to find out more.

I really hope everything turns out okay for you but do get back in touch if needed.

    Take care

    Naomi
