Low albumin and treatment

Hi why have they not given my husband treatment for liver cancer i. E. immunotherapy and chemo because his albumin has dropped to 25 , why and can it go up again? He's had one round but because his albumin has dropped they say it's too low for treatment. Thank you in advance

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your husband. It is difficult to know why treatment has not been given without being involved in your husband's care.

When blood tests such as albumin levels are not within normal limits it is quite normal to have chemotherapy delayed but I would get your husband to speak to the doctors or specialist nurse involved in his care to explain what this means.

I am not sure if his other blood tests were also abnormal.

I can understand that it can be disappointing when treatment is not given but the doctors need to make sure that the liver and kidneys are working well as they help to metabolise any drugs that are given

I do hope that you find out more.

If you would like to speak to one of the nurses on the helpline then you are welcome to give us a call.

The Freephone number is 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

    All the best,

    Catherine
