Fine needle aspiration results conflicting

I had a fine needle aspiration of a lump near my left parotid. It's a painless lump, but is not going away. It took 3 weeks to get the results back and then I got a call from the ent consultant to say it's a benign lump, however I have had a patient summary from my doctor's and in there it has said that "FNA- yielded slightly mucoid material, concerning mucoepidermoid carcinoma. No immediate complication" my understanding of the term mucoepidermoid carcinoma is that it's cancerous? However the consultant didn't mention this and said they wouldn't look to operate on it unless it grew bigger or became inflamed/infected. I'm a bit worried now as to what is correct or not and what to do. The lump is still there and has been for about 3 months now.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I can appreciate your confusion about your biopsy results but I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to clarify things for you because as nurses, we do not interpret medical reports. This really needs to come from your specialist team.

Probably, the best thing to do is ring the specialist/consultant secretary and ask for an appointment so the consultant can explain your biopsy results to you. If you have any difficulty with this, then your GP may be able to enquire on your behalf.

I hope you know more about your situation soon. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
