Mounjaro and risk of thyroid cancer

Hi,

please can i have some advice. I am classed as obese which i know puts me at increased risk for many cancers. I have tried to loose weight by diet and exercise but find it difficult. Im looking into trying mounjaro (GLP1) to help me get the weight off. However my mum died of anaplastic thyroid cancer over 10 years ago and one of the contraindications for this medication is a history or family history of a type of thyroid cancer (MTC). Is anaplastic thyroid cancer hereditary?

Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry about your concerns surrounding thyroid cancer, do read through our risks and causes page on our website which may be helpful.

It is worth remembering that thyroid cancer is rare so it would be even rarer to have a hereditary link, but if you remain worried do talk to your GP.

Screening for thyroid cancer doesn't happen as standard, but it may be that if referred to a genetics clinic, they might think you qualify.

The doctor who is prescribing the Mounjaro should be aware of your full medical history, so do talk through the benefits, risks, and side effects of taking this drug with them.

    Take care,

    Sarah.

  • Hi, just read you message and wonder if you took the medication I am having the same issue as my son had papillary thyroid cancer. Thanks

  • Hi, did you get a reply with your question. My daughter had the same as your son so I’m just wondering if I can take mounjaro

  • Hello Coley 71 and thanks for your post,

Every case is very individual so it is worth discussing taking Mounjaro with your GP.

Papillary thyroid cancer is one of the more common cancers but it is a rare cancer and the hereditary risk is therefore low.

I have posted thyroid cancer risks for you to look at.

It is important to discuss this all with your GP and not make any decisions about taking Mounjaro without your GP's involvement. They are the best people to discuss your medical history and whether it would be in your best interests to take this drug.

It is a while since emp-p posted so you may not get a reply to your question.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Catherine
