Immunotherapy

My mum has secondary liver cancer which has also spread to her rib, age 82 generally quite fit and well with a healthy lifestyle. She had choroid melanoma approx 3 years ago but in Sept 2024 something was picked upon the routine 6 monthly scan and she is now stage 4.

The question is why cant she have chemo or radiotherapy ONLY Immunotherapy - she says this was never explained

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your mum's situation. This must be a difficult time for you both.

Chemotherapy doesn’t work as well against melanoma as it does for some other types of cancer. Doctors are more likely to use targeted cancer drugs or immunotherapy first to treat melanoma as these are the most effective treatments for advanced melanoma. If these drugs are not suitable or are no longer controlling the melanoma chemotherapy may then be considered. Radiotherapy is sometimes used to shrink advanced melanoma or help to control or relieve symptoms.

The best thing for you and your mum to do is to discuss treatment options with her specialist team as they are familiar with all her medical details. If she has a specialist nurse (CNS) involved in her care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

I hope this is of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
