Mild Endometrium thickness

Hello there,

I had an ultrasound that showed I had a 6mm mildly thickened endometrium. I have no spotting or bleeding. My family doctor wants to do a biopsy to be safe but wow, I'm scared. Especially when he said the biopsy could hurt and wants me to take pain pills before hand. Any advice. Thank you!

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I think you probably already know that endometrial thickening can sometimes be linked to cancer, but it doesn't have to be. It’s more often linked to an overgrowth of cells (hyperplasia) or polyps (harmless growths ) which can make the endometrium look thick as well. But a hysteroscopy looks inside the womb to get a better look at what is going on, especially with the thickened womb lining. This can help decide on the best treatment for you.

Having a hysteroscopy can be very uncomfortable for some people which is why it’s recommended to take some painkillers an hour before the procedure. The healthcare team at the hospital can give you something to relax you on the day if you find it very uncomfortable.

I hope everything turns out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Oh, thanks, Celine for your prompt and helpful response. I appreciate it enormously. Yes, I am very much worried it might be cancer. I'm actually not having a hysteroscopy. I'm having a biopsy using a pipelle, and also he's going to do my pap smear as well. I've had pap smears all my life which never bothered me but my doctor retired and another doctor (not the one who is doing my biopsy) did one 3 years ago which hurt, until she switched to a smaller 'tool' and did it in 2 seconds. I happened to mention to my current doctor - who is fantastic - that my last pap smear hurt and he said the biopsy could hurt more and suggested the pain killers before. I'm scared of the biopsy procedure and then of course the results. He said my endometrium should be lower than a 6, but I have no other symptoms - no blood etc. Thanks for listening!!!

P.S. My transvaginal ultrasound and CT scan showed nothing - no masses or anything.
