metastatic spine cancer

Hi. My dad has been told that he has metastatic spine cancer which is also in a few other bones too. We are a bit in the dark at the moment as it’s only a recent diagnosis and do not yet know where the primary source of cancer is coming from. My dad, myself and my family are scared as we have no idea what any of this means or what can be done. Does anyone know if there is treatment for this please as we are not being informed by anyone at the moment? Thank you.

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your dad, this must be a tough time for all the family.

When cancer is found in the body thought to be secondaries ( sometimes called metastases, meaning cancer spread from somewhere else in the body) the doctors will run a number of different tests and scans to find the primary tumour.

This can be unsettling for both the patient and loved one's as it can delay treatment starting but without knowing the primary cancer, it is difficult to know what treatment is needed.

There are some rare instances when the primary cannot be located and if and when this occurs it is known as cancer of unknown primary (CUP) which can be more difficult to treat. However at the moment it is still early days so hopefully the doctors will find the primary site.

Hang in there for now and hopefully you will know more soon.

Do get back in touch if you need or want to or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes
