My father has advanced prostate cancer. It’s now in his spine, hips and ribs. Every time he goes into hospital he comes out with a course of steroids and he’s so much better when he’s on them but he isn’t allowed to stay on them. Why is that?
I can understand your enquiry. Steroids can cause difficult side effects and increase the risk of diabetes and gastric irritation with long term use. They can also have reduced effect after a period of time. So a break and a new course will often have a renewed beneficial effect on the patient.
