Difficulty Swallowing “chocking on food” Recently Diagnosed with Lung Cancer

I was recently diagnosed with Lung Cancer which I must say came as I big shock I have been asking my GP to refer me over for an mri scan as my grandmother and great grandmother both died of lung cancer. Even the Chest clinic asked for a MRI scan and I was not given one which has now devastated me because now I have it.

i am now unable to swallow solid food apart from soup custard or weetabix.I start chocking as the food gets stuck and starts coming back up and I can’t breathe until I vomit

Can anyone give me any additional advice what I can eat or do about this issue it’s very frustrating it really is

  • Hi Sisterchic11 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your recent diagnosis. I can appreciate this has been a shock and must be a very difficult time for you.

I wondered if your cancer specialist or nurse specialist (CNS) if you have one, is aware of your difficulties in swallowing. As they know your situation they would be best placed to advise you, they may be able to refer you to a dietician for support.

On our website, we have information about soft diet meals and tips for people with difficulties swallowing that might be helpful to read. There is also the cancer and nutrition helpline which is run by dieticians who may also have some further suggestions.

I hope this reply is useful and the above links are helpful. If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on the helpline, the freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040 and we are available between 9 am and 5 pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
