Massage therapy

I have secondary Breast cancer with mets in spine, liver, brain and lungs. I'm doing okay and my question is really a luxury one. I've been invited for a spa day. Are there treatments I should avoid? I heard that body massage can do more harm than good. Hoping you'll tell me that is not true!

Thanks

  • Hi Kate and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear that you have secondary breast cancer, but it's wonderful to read that you feel okay and are looking forward to a spa day.

I am pleased to say that massage is safe for people living with cancer. Some hospitals have therapists working within the Trust who provide complementary therapies to those who would like them.

I would suggest that if you are thinking of having a massage at a spa or another treatment centre that you phone ahead to let them know that you have recently had treatment for breast cancer. Some therapists may be anxious about massaging patients who have had cancer in the past.

If you have had recent treatment the masseur may also want a letter from your doctor saying that they are happy for you to have a massage.

Certain spa treatments, like saunas or jacuzzis, may not be advisable for individuals undergoing chemotherapy due to an increased risk of lowered immunity or infection. It is a good idea to consult with your Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist, who can provide guidance on which treatments are safe for you to undergo.

We also have a webpage on individual therapies that you may like to read, and Breast Cancer Now has some useful information on complementary therapies.

I hope reading this helps and that you have a lovely day at the spa.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
