Has my skin cancer came back

I had bcc, had it removed.  Is it normal to come back in a different place

I had it on my chest, now I've noticed it on my shoulder,

I've also have some discomfort my neck

Trust me to find it on a holiday period

  • Hello and thank you for posting.

I am sorry you are worried about something you have found on your shoulder.

Getting another BCC once you have had one is not unusual.

Do contact your GP when you can to get it assessed, and they will refer you into the hospital if they feel it is needed.

Take care, and if you want tot chat to the nurses the number is freephone 0808 800 4040. Lines are open mon-fri,9-5.

  • I’m an old male (82) and I can tell you Bcc’s do come back - perhaps NOT in exactly the same place, but make themselves known elsewhere.

i get them removed, but they are like garden moles…….. up the come in another place!

I had one removed on my forehead today (7 January 2025) and I must say, the local anaesthetic did not work !
I felt the 4 jabs (very sore) then the doc got on with the “punch biopsy”.  The pain was almost unbearable, the doc did not bother asking if I was OK but the nurse did notice me gripping the edge of the table very tightly.

I mentioned the heavy pain as she said “you should not have felt anything”.   I’ve had lots of pain in my long life, but this was very unexpected.   I’m in two minds whether to report this incident to the GMC (General Medical Council).

What do you think Nurses ?    Should I ?

  • Like Nurse Sarah says after having a BCC removed it is not unusual to have recurrent BCCs

Reason being you are likely to have sun damaged skin on other areas of your body.

To help prevent these recurrences look after your skin, use factor 50 sun cream all year round on exposed skin, do not sunbathe or use tanning salons. Wear a hat, Cover up in strong sunshine and avoid midday sun.

  • I've had a punch biopsy on my head WHICH hurt very badly too. I think it is difficult getting the anaesthetic delivered as skin is very thin layer on top of skull and it is a very sensitive area.

It hurt for a few hours I took some paracetamol till it eased off.

If it has not left you with lasting pain, I would just put it down to experience, reporting minor incidents to GMC just wastes their time and yours. Time that staff could put to better use like treating patients during their busy schedule.

Hopefully you will not have to wait too long to get the BCC removed completely.

    my twopence worth

  • Hello EastEndGuy, and thank you for posting.

I am so sorry that you have had this experience, it sounds awful.

I do think you need to consider speaking to PALS at the hospital where you had the procedure and let them know what happened. Or if it was at a clinic write to the clinic manager.

It is not unusual once you have had a BCC, to get more and they are more common the older we get.

Take care and I hope this all gets sorted for you soon.

    Sarah.
