Partner's cancer referral

I suffer with anxiety and my partner has had a 2ww prostate cancer referal. He has all the symptoms and a very high psa score.. we got the news of his quick referal over Christmas and I've been struggling to come to terms with everything.. we're both very scared. I'm inconsolable and don't know what to do.. I'm trying best to hold it together for him but my heart is broken.

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are both feeling anxious and I can understand that uncertainty can be unsettling but try if you can not to over think it for now.

So far all you know is that he has a high PSA score. Your partner may now see a urologist and may be offered an MRI scan which will help determine how likely it will be that he has prostate cancer. The doctors will then consider performing a biopsy.

I know it is scary and unsettling but you may find the links below helpful in understanding what may happen next.

There is some information on Prostate CancerUK website and on our website about getting diagnosed

If you have more information then you will understand when the doctors explain about the different tests and it won't sound so alarming.

There are various charities that may help manage your anxiety and give you some coping techniques over the next week or so.

You can look on the NHS website about Every Mind Matters which you both might find helpful. There is also a charity called anxietyUK.

Hopefully your partner won't have too long to wait for his appointment. I am sure that once you have more information you will both feel more in control and know what to expect.

You could try and discuss your anxiety with your GP if you think that would help.

You are both more then welcome to ring and speak to one of the helpline nurses. The nurses are here Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday and the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040

    All the best,

    Catherine
