Cancer operation in vertebrae

I. Want to have more information on surgical procedures that can repair and/or strengthen a cancer damaged vertebrae in my lower spine which is currently pressing on a nerve and causing continual pain. I have been taking a variety of well known pain killers for 2 years and they no longer work. I would like to hear from others who have had this procedure. How effective can it be? Can I ask my GP for a referral for this treatment?

Thank you

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I am sorry that you have had a problem with pain due to secondary bone cancer in your spine for the last 2 years. Pain long-term can be incredibly draining and affect every aspect of your life. If you have not already seen a pain doctor or specialist nurse, sometimes they are also called a palliative care team who specialise in symptom control, then do talk to your doctor.

Treatments to mend vertebrae in the spine affected by cancer should be a discussion between your cancer doctor, a neurologist, and maybe an orthopaedic surgeon. It is quite individual about who can have surgery as it depends on what is happening with your cancer and other treatments. It may be that instead, the doctors need to review your medications or changing as nerve painkillers are different from other types of medication.

Take care and if you want to talk to the nurses on the helpline, the number is 0808 800 4040, lines open mon-fri 9-5.

    Sarah.
