Cancer medications

I have stage 4 renal cancer (small cell).  I’ve had Sunitinib and lately Cabozantinib (both are kinase inhibitors). After two years of treatment my consultant thinks the tumours have figured the medication out and is suggesting we try immunotherapy in the new year. I know I should ask the consultant but I was afraid of the answer to my question which is; if immontherapy fails, are there other types of medication different to kinase inhibitors or is immunotherapy likely to be a last resort. I’m 63 in a fortnight and grandfather to 11 and right now I’m scared

  • Hi there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your situation and that your cancer is no longer responding to the treatment you are on.

Unfortunately we cannot say if there will be further options beyond immunotherapy without being involved in your care.

This is something worth asking your team but for now their priority is likely to be getting going with the immunotherapy. No one can ever predict how someone will get on or respond to treatment and sometimes it is about taking things step by step and day by day rather than looking too far into the future.

I really wish you all the best as you start a new treatment but do get back in touch if you need to.

    All the best

    Naomi
