Constipation 7 days after emergency removal of 25% of Colon due to donut cancer stopping solids flow.

Returned home 5 days after  surgery with very loose stools  that turned to diarrhea.  Had small scrambled eggs and now no solids passed for 24 hrs. Feeling little constipated but don't want to use strong laxitive to protect my recently reconnected colon. (no stoma).

I'll try prunes. Any other ideas.

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

  • Hi Bruced and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I noticed you have posted in our nurses section of the forum so I just wanted to let you know that our nurses are off over Christmas and won't be picking up any posts until Friday 27th December.

We know it's tricky to get help over the festive period but if this issue doesn't improve, or gets worse, we would recommend seeking medical advice from either your cancer team - hopefully they have given you a number you can call for out of hours help - or through the NHS on 111.

I hope this information we have about coping with constipation will prove useful as well.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi there Bruced and thanks for the post

I am sorry for the delay in getting back to you and hope things have started to move in the right direction for you.

If you needed advice over the christmas period I hope you were able to get it and that you are able to move your bowels again. If not I would suggest speaking with the doctor or nurse involved in your care.

It isn't unusual to experience loose stools and diarrhoea after the type of surgery you had. If you then weren't eating very much then there is a good chance that you may miss a day or 2 of going to the toilet without it causing any issues.

As I say I hope things are resolving now but do get back in touch if you need to.

    All the best

    Take care

    Naomi
