STEM CELL TRANSPLANT

I have a few questions about this as my ex partner is going through this at the moment. His hodkins lymphoma has come back and spread to his bones now so they’re doing a stem cell transplant in january.

What are the statistics on it working/not working?

What happens if it doesn’t work?

Can i go and visit while he’s in hospital?

Do i need to prepare for it not going well? (i like being upfront and realistic with myself so i can come to terms)

I don’t know what’s going on and it’s scary and i like to know all the information and facts i can about stuff to ease my mind a little so any answers to anything would be appreciated thank you!!

  • Hello S1Loz and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn of your ex-partner's situation this must be a difficult time.

It is difficult to give meaning to statistics because they are not talking about your ex- partner's situation. This depends on several things, how well they respond to chemotherapy, how fit they are, and whether they are using their own stem cells or donor stem cells.

We cannot say what will happen if the transplant does not work as we are not involved in their care, only their hospital team can give you that information.

Visiting will depend on the ward hospital policy. You should avoid visiting if you have a cold or cough, as their immune system will be very low following the chemotherapy. You will likely need to do strict hand washing and wear an apron but your ex-partner's team at the hospital will be able to give more information on this.

There is a possibility the transplant won't be effective, but it is only when they go through the treatment will you know more.

I realise you want to know more now, and I am sorry that I cannot be more specific, but there is often a lot of uncertainty at this time.

I hope the treatment goes well.

If you would like to talk things through with one of our nurses we are here until 5 pm today and return to the office on Friday the 27th of December. The freephone number to call is 0808 800 4040.

    Kind regards

    Jemma
