Chicken pox risk

Hi my husband has stage 4 brain cancer and is undergoing radiotherapy. Our granddaughter who is 5 has just got chicken pox and is supposed to be visiting us Xmas day should we risk it even if it has reached the scabbed over stage by then

  • Hi Caroline,

The nurses won't be back until Monday and it may take them a while to catch up with the weekend's posts. I suggest your husband contacts his cancer nurse, either on the Emergency number he should have been given or on Monday morning. Meanwhile, I don't know if this previous thread will help you cancerchat.cancerresearchuk.org/.../chickenpox-and-radiotherapy

I hope you get to see your granddaughter and have a lovely family Christmas.

  • Hello Caroline_C and thank you for posting,

As AngieT has said it would be a good idea to speak to your hospital team or GP about this.

People who are having treatments such as chemotherapy and in some situations, radiotherapy, may have a weak immune system and do need to be careful. However, having radiotherapy on the brain does not usually affect the immune system.

If your husband has had chickenpox before he is probably immune to it and so his risk of developing chickenpox is low. If he hasn't had chickenpox, there maybe a risk that he could get it if exposed to someone who is still contagious with chickenpox.

I hope this helps a little and you can spend time with your granddaughter

    kind regards

    Jemma
