Significant Tumour

Good Morning

A week ago, I received a diagnosis for an oesophageal cancer.

Since then, things have moved rapidly and I have had a CT scan & also bloods taken yesterday at the hospital.  Before I attended hospital for my bloods, I received a phone call from the Gastroenterology department to say that I had to attend urgently today.  I did ask if I could have see the Doctor whilst I was up there for bloods, but he was all booked up.  No further information would be given.  So I have spent a sleepless night worrying about what today will bring.  I also looked at my NHS record and it says I have a "significant" tumour, and I can't seem to find out what that means?  Is that the worst prognosis I could be given?

I so look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Sue

  • Hello Sue and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your recent oesophageal cancer diagnosis. This must be a difficult time for you.

It is hard for us to comment on your specific situation as we are not involved in your clinical care and don't have access to your medical details. But hopefully you will know more today when you are seen at the hospital.

After a cancer diagnosis patients are discussed within a MDT ( Multi Disciplinary Team) meeting where all the specialists come together to decide the best treatment plan for each individual patient. The decisions are based upon the type and stage ( size and extent) of cancer as this can influence outlook/ prognosis, as well as how fit and well they are and if they have any other health conditions that may affect them having treatment.

You can read more about oesophageal cancer on our website.

I hope this is of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
