Radiotherapy planning

Hi following breast cancer surgery (they got it all and prognosis is excellent) I am to have radiotherapy.  On Tuesday I had a PET scan where I was injected with a radioactive dye.  Today I was given an appointment for 31/12 for a radiotherapy planing meeting and I will have a ct scan.  What was the pet scan for?

  • Hi Helen 2803

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery for breast cancer, but I am happy to learn that the prognosis is good.

I appreciate you have questions but the best people to answer them would be your breast care nurse as she is part of your hospital team.

Generally after receiving treatment for cancer, a PET scan can help determine how effective the treatment has been, particularly if surgery was successful.  While a CT scan can reveal lumps or masses, a PET scan can indicate whether this tissue contains active cancer or not.

The CT scan used in radiotherapy planning marks the area for treatment and places markers to ensure that the radiotherapy is consistently aimed at the same location each time. It is not used to scan the whole body.

I hope you find this information useful.
