Pros and cons of radiotherapy.

Following a hysterectomy I have been given the choice of having radiotherapy to prevent reoccurrence. It is a once only treatment. How do I decide whether to have it or not?

  • Hi Helen 24 and thank you for your post.

I'm sorry to read about your situation.

Treatment decisions about whether to have radiotherapy or not are often challenging and many people struggle with them. People vary in making a decision about this depending on the type and extent of their cancer and looking at the benefits and disadvantages of treatment. I think it is important that you understand all the information you have been given by your specialist team to help you reach a decision. There is often quite a lot to take in and it can be overwhelming, so I would encourage you to get back in touch with them if there is anything you aren't sure about.

If you have a specialist nurse involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with further information. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

You may also like to look at Macmillan Cancer Supports information on making treatment decisions as it provides some information and tips that you may find useful. Also Maggies have information you may find helpful in making a decision. You can also call them or pop in, if you live near one of their centres, for more advice.

I hope you make the decision you are comfortable with.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
