Swelling in ankles/feet

Hi just quick question my husband has prostate and bone cancer.  He’s feeling cold so he’s kept socks on and his feet and ankles were swollen last night.  I took his socks off and elevated his feet the swelling has gone down.  Can the cancer cause swelling or you think just because he’s had socks on.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Often swelling in the lower limbs is known as oedema (a build up of fluid). Oedema can be caused by many different things including reduced mobility or not moving, the cancer itself or a sign that the heart or kidneys aren't working too well.

The swelling may have been made worse by your husband's socks as tight fitting socks can restrict blood flow. But this improved when you took them off and elevated his feet. This helped the fluid to drain.

As this has happened, it would be a good idea to mention this to his doctor or nurse. They can check for any underlying causes. In the meantime, try and keep your husband's feet elevated when he is sitting or lying down and ensure his clothing isn't tight around his ankles.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

  • Thank you.  He’s at work 8 hours a day so moving around constantly.  I will check tonight if swelling changed. He’s just finished chemo and awaiting ct scans
