Testicular cancer swelling time

Hello,

I'm 42yo and I was diagnosed with stage 1 testicular cancer (seminoma) in November, after I'd done an orchidectomy end of October. I'm now starting a short course of chemo on carboplatin. My scrotal swelling is still there, though, and I don't know how long is normal for it to completely go away. It's not that painful and I can manage with a couple of paracetamols every day but it's still there and it's an issue for my sex life and it makes me not feel safe to exercise. Is there an specific timeframe for it to go away? I've heard anything between 6 weeks and 3 months and I understand everyone is different, but is there a point where I should be worried?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Scrotal swelling after an orchidectomy can take time to go down and this will vary from person to person. Generally, mild swelling may last for 6 to 12 weeks but some people notice an improvement sooner than this, while others may take a bit longer.

Most men resume sexual activity as soon as they feel well enough to do so. If the swelling or discomfort makes this difficult your doctor will advise you on this and tell you when you can resume. Exercise such as walking is good as it improves circulation and healing. Avoid any strenuous exercises until your doctor says it’s safe.
