Chemotherapy

Hello my name is Wayne, I have had my first lot of chemotherapy for gastric cancer, I was told it may make me unwell and that sure is the case, I have an overwhelming sense of nausea and I havnt eaten for a few days, I just cannot manage to eat anything, I am due to have chemotherapy every two weeks, I just want to know if these symptoms will cease so I can eat before my next lot of chemo. Thank you for any information

  • Hello Wayne and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear that chemotherapy is making you sick which is making eating difficult. Unfortunately, chemotherapy can make people feel and be sick.

Hopefully, you have a card from the chemotherapy team, (it might say the number on it is for an emergency) that lists numbers to call. While you may feel this is not an emergency this is something you do need to let your chemo team know about, and not wait until the next treatment. This is because they can give you anti-sickness medication or change the type that you may have been given that is not doing a good job.

Do, try to keep taking fluids, eat little and often and try to take foods high in protein and calories if you can.

We have information about nausea and vomiting and cancer treatment on our website, this may be helpful to read.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
