Just diagnosed

My 76 year old dad has been diagnosed with lung cancer, biopsy done Thursday, was told they caught it early. Results next Thursday, however get home & read the discharge letter it states the code T4N3M0, having googled this we see stage 4, this was never mentioned at both appointment, surely this should have been discussed rather than having to read on a discharge letter? The little glimmer of hope with the doctor saying they caught it early has been pulled away after reading this. I guess we wait till next Thursday to speak to the doctor. But is this treatable?
thank you

  • Hi there and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation and appreciate what a difficult time this must be for the family.

I think for now you need to sit tight and wait to speak to the doctors once the biopsy results are in to confirm exactly the type and stage of lung cancer he has.

The TNM system stands for Tumour, Nodes and Metastases, so for your dad this translates to T4, the size of the tumour, N3 means 3 lymph nodes have cancer in them and M0 means no distant spread to other organs, which is a positive. The doctor involved in your dad's care can explain what this means in greater detail with you but a T4,N3, M0 wouldn't be stage 4 by my calculations as would need to have metastases (cancer spread) to be this.

I am sure the doctors wouldn't have been so hopeful if they didn't think this could be treated.

I hope the appointment goes well on Thursday, do get back in touch if you need to,

    Best wishes

    Naomi
