Thy 3a

My thyroid nodule was picked up by a CT scan during my surveillance post bowel cancer treatment. As it is 3a, my consultant says he has monitored for two years and it doesn't seem to have changed much so he wants to discharge me. It is on the isthmus, which I believe is more likely to be cancerous than elsewhere. I am anxious that I will be discharged and the nodule will later prove to have been cancerous but by then will have spread and be fatal. Is there any other test I can ask for? Can I ask for my monitoring to be continued?

  • Hi there and thank you for your post

We cannot comment on individuals situations but I can only assume that if the doctor is discharging you they must be confident that it is safe to do so.

Thyroid nodules aren't uncommon and most of the time will be benign ( non cancerous) however if the doctor was concerned in any way they would either be wanting to either carry out more tests such as a biopsy or remove it surgically to confirm what it is or to continue with regular monitoring.

I would suggest going back and sharing the worries you have about this with your doctor so that they can either reassure you further or devise a plan moving forward.

I hope this reply is helpful to you.

    Best wishes
