Colonoscopy found two pedunculated polyps

Had to go back today to have the two removed flexible sigmoidoscopy

one is 16mm the other 40mm

I’ve read that this means they are both classed as giant polyps and I have a 75% risk of cancer. I’m honestly petrified. I’ve not told my family as I don’t want to stress them

  • Hi 727 and thank you for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and I can understand that this must be a difficult time for you.

It's good that your polyps have been removed. A histopathologist will examine them under a microscope. Your doctors, who are directly involved in your care, will be the best source of information once they have the results.

Waiting for results is seldom an easy situation to cope with. Try to keep an open mind about everything for now until your doctors can tell you more and take things one step at a time.  Bowel polyps are very common and most are non cancerous.

People often experience a whole range of emotions when waiting for results. We know that talking can often relieve some of the distress and anxiety. There's some useful advice about talking therapies and how to access them on the NHS website. In the meantime,  Anxiety UK has a good website with helpful tips on how to deal with anxiety in these situations.

I really hope you know more soon and that everything will be okay for you.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards

    Tina
