SCC insitu Efudix and work

Hello, after what only could be described as an awful dermatologist appointment yesterday after 12 month wait - having been told this time last year I had a SCC (2 week referral) then downgraded to BCC (all of which told to me by various receptionists not medics) to then be told yesterday Bowens (SCC insitu). Being red haired fair skinned- 2 x siblings with hx of melonoma and an awful adolescent sun exposure hx I have many other areas of mild concerns inc a recent nodule on medium congentital nevi, and was expecting some body mapping, thinking the dermatoligist would be the person to do this. When I brought up the other concerns I was made to feel like a nuisance inc an eye roll!  I was given a px for Efudix for the leision insitu to give to my GP and told no follow up. Wasn't given an opportunity to discuss. Only when I came out and despite being upset my colleagues questioned my ability to work. Being that I work with pregnant and nursing mothers. I have contacted occupational health but was wondering if you know of any risks re this ?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry you had such a bad experience when you attended the dermatology clinic recently and you feel your questions and concerns were not taken seriously. This sort of experience is distressing and can leave anyone feeling let down.

You may want to pass on some feedback to the clinic involved about your experience. If you find it difficult to get hold of someone it may be worth contacting your local Patient and Liaison Advice Service  ( PALS). They offer confidential advice and support to patients and their families. They may be able to look into this on your behalf.

Efudix cream is a medication typically used to treat certain skin conditions by targeting abnormal cells. While the cream is effective for it’s intended use, it does contain a chemotherapy drug. It’s generally safe to be around pregnant and nursing mothers while using Efudix cream, as long as you take proper precautions, such as washing your hands thoroughly after applying the cream as any residue could transfer to others. If possible, cover the treated area with clothing or a non stick dressing.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
