Newly diagnosed-choosing treatment

Hi I have been newly diagnosed with breast cancer . My disease was found on routine mammogram so I went to where the inward screening appointment was made but I really wanted to be treated at the another hospital in Sutton. Tomorrow I go to the local clinic to start discussing treatment. Can I insist on  a referral to the other hospital?
in the background of my life I lost my husband to cancer  11 months ago & almost lost my son to a major accident - I have  sat in 13 different hospitals in 18 months & as a nurse myself  I have seen the variations in care & my confidence is at a very low ebb , will this be taken in to account?

  • Hello there and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis alongside losing your husband to cancer and your son's accident, it really does sound like you have been through alot.

As a nurse yourself I am sure you are aware that whilst you can request to be referred to a different hospital for treatment, if you live outside the catchment area there is a good chance the referral is rejected. I am led to believe large cancer hospitals such as The Royal Marsden are in high demand and just don't have the capacity to be able to accept everyone who wishes to be treated there.

Breast cancer generally are treated as locally as possible and it is often in rarer cancer types or more challenging circumstances where patients are treated out of area at more specialist centres.

I would suggest speaking with the doctors and nurses within the hospital you have been allocated to see if you can gain their trust and go from there. Do share any negative experiences with them so they get a better understanding of what you have experienced in the past and how this is affecting you today.

I hope you know more very soon and that the treatment you require goes well. Please get back in touch if you have more questions or if you prefer give us a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Take care

    Naomi
