There is still research to be done on HPV, it is a very complex virus, but I will do what I can to answer your questions.

When a couple is in a long-term relationship they will likely share the HPV between them over time, so continuing with condoms would not be necessary, but we also do not know if your husband has had it.

From what is understood once the immune system has got on top of one type of HPV it means it will remember it, the same as it would with other illnesses, and stop that particular strain or 'bug' causing further problems. But, as there are many different types of HPV it does not mean your immune system can protect you if you become exposed to a different strain.

It may be that you or your husband still have HPV, but we understand that strains can lay dormant or may hibernate in the body to a level that is then not detectable. Only when active, can it cause cell changes in the cervix for a woman, and be found at screening.

Cervical screening is a prevention program that is there to protect women from HPV becoming a problem in the future. Those abnormal cells that the HPV has caused, are removed and you are monitored. Continuing in the screening program, attending appointments, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle by not smoking, should help keep the risk of cervical cancer low.
