Weight loss and cancer

Hi

Weight loss is a symptom of cancer.  May I ask do people with cancer just continue to lose weight?

  • Hello Brenda, and thank you for your question.

Weight loss can be a symptom of cancer, but equally some people do not always have this.

Cancer and its treatments can cause many different dietary problems and so these can all affect weight, as can many other various illnesses. Still, some treatments may also have a positive impact on someone's weight.

In some situations, people lose a lot of weight with cancer and they get diagnosed with something called cachexia, but this is not everyone.

In all, it is a difficult question to give one single answer to. There are many cancers, treatments, and side effects, and people's general health can be different when diagnosed. So this is all very down to the individual, but a singular answer would be no, people with cancer do not always continue to lose weight.

Take care Brenda, and if you have any concerns about your situation do talk to the doctor involved or speak to your GP. If you would like to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline the number is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Sarah.
