Bloating after surgery

Hi, i had my kidney removed due to having a 10cm tumor. I had the surgery 3 days ago and have really bad bloating and can't get rid of it. Any advise on helping to relive the symptoms? Many thanks

  • Peppermint water or tea is a great help and small meals

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your recent surgery and your bloating symptoms.

It is normal to have a bit of bloating after surgery. This pain is described as 'wind like pain' and is due to the surgeon using gas to inflate your abdominal cavity so that the surgeon can see the kidney better during the surgery.

It is still early days since you have had the surgery but it may help as the other forum member suggested to take peppermint water and herbal teas. As the days go by and you feel more mobile this will hopefully ease. Try and take regular short walks which may help the discomfort.

It is important to drink plenty of fluids and start introducing fibre in to your diet. Hopefully when your bowels return to normal this will also help improve your symptoms. If you are finding it difficult to open your bowels you may find that you need a laxative to help with this so do get in touch with your GP.

I hope this helps. It you are concerned that your symptoms are not improving then do contact the hospital or GP or you could ring NHS 111 if you are really concerned

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,
