Kidney cancer

I am having surgery to have my left kidney removed because it is likely I have cancer there.

I am wondering how long I could be in hospital the nurse said maybe  one to two days and leaflets say 3/4 .

And I am worried about how my other kidney will cope.

The cancer was found when I was having a altra sound because I had been having slot of urine infections

After they found it all treatment regarding to infections stopped and I am worried that the other kidney may not cope on its own

  • Hello Madahar and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your situation.

Depending on the type of surgery you have, and your recovery, will determine how long you stay in hospital.

We have some information on our website about recovery after surgery which you might find helpful to look at.

I am sure that the doctors will have taken in to account how your other kidney is working when they were doing all the tests before the surgery but do talk to your team about your concerns.

When deciding to discharge you the doctors will want to make sure that you are passing urine and that you have recovered well enough to go home. If you are reasonably fit then this may be at an earlier date but it is difficult for your team to be too precise as they want to make sure that you are well enough to go home and that you are mobilising well after the surgery.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,
    Catherine

  • Hi thank you for your reply it was very helpful especially the after surgery information.

The hospital leaflet didn't have half the information on theirs.and after the diagnosis that they are removing the kidney I was a bit in shock and didn't ask all the questions I wanted to about pain relief etc

    Thank you again

  • My dad has his kidney removed years ago because of kidney cancer. He's 78 now and his remaining kidney is still working fine despite him having been prone to stones.

  • Sorry you're going through this x

  • Thank you, I am 75 and it was a shock when I found out.

I wasn't expecting that, I was having treatment for a prolapse and  urine infections and was having a ultra sound when they found it, but they say the infections have nothing to do with the cancer on the kidney.

Glad your dad is ok with one kidney now. I do worry about the other kidney though.

    Thanks again for your chat
