upcoming operation

I’ve been diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Stage 1 grade 2. On Monday I am having a full hysterectomy, two cardinal lymph nodes will be checked then. if cancer is found more will be taken. Is planned as a lapascopic with other options if necessary. I have full confidence in my surgeon but I am terrified. I’m otherwise healthy ann not overweight . I have some mutant genes found in hysteroscopy and  waiting for results if lunch test which I think will be positive and we have 3 grown up daughters . i’m just not coping well with any of it. My husband is wonderful as are my daughters . Radiation therapy was mentioned , poss 3 sessions . Is this likely if no cancer is found in lymph nodes.. I know i’m so lucky to have wonderful treatment and I need to be here for my family . But this fear is totally consuming. I looked after my mother 12 years ago at home while she died horrifically of cancer . Any advice of how to calm down would help . Thank you

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry to read about your situation and can appreciate that the thought of having surgery can feel very overwhelming

I know it's easier said than done but try and take things one step at a time. Some people find talking things through with family and friends and keeping busy can sometimes help. Also try and focus on what you can control right now by eating a good diet, getting enough rest, and doing some gentle activities that you enjoy, The NHS website has some useful tips on breathing exercises for stress that you might find helpful.

If you have a gynaecology specialist nurse (CNS) involved in your care then perhaps they can provide you with some support. You often have to call and leave them a message and they will get back to you.

During surgery, they automatically check the lymph nodes and if no cancer is found there, they often still give radiotherapy to reduce the risk of cancer coming back.

If you test positive for Lynch syndrome your daughters will be offered testing. If necessary, they would be referred to a genetics clinic which will advise about the sorts of surveillance they may need.

I hope everything goes smoothly. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9 am till 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
