Curious, need some opinions

Hello, I'm 25 and I've noticed a raised freckle, turned mole which has raised above my right ear, I've been doctor couple months ago and referred to dermatologist but still not heard anything months down the line, I'm worried and anxious, it's raised and also black, part is raised off the skin and feel a bit sharp too.

anything suggestions on what to do would be helpful, thankyou!

  •  Hi Helsclofoeekd,

A very warm welcome to our forum. It might be worth contacting your GP again and confirming that you have actually been referred. It does take some time to get a dermatology appointment in most cases, but you might also find it helpful to ask your GP who you were referred to. You could then contact the hospital to see how far up the list you are. I do hope that you hear something soon.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • I agree with Jolamine, chase the referral. If there's any risk it could be cancer it should be on the two week referral pathway. Months down the line with no notice isn't right. Dermatology is different in different hospitals but our local ones have a clinic to photograph lesions to be assessed by the dermatologist within a few weeks as they're not hitting that two week target but months with no notice isn't right.

Good luck, I hope it's benign but definitely chase it on Monday when the surgery opens.

  • You need to go back and state clearly there has been a change. That alone is a red flag that means they have to take this more seriously. a lot of moles are put under a wait and watch criteria, and the wait and watch approach has resulted in you noticing a change. Your gp will want to know about this.An evolving mole warrants a 2 week referral. It's also not beyond the realm of possibility that your referral has been lost in a black hole

  • Yes, my partner's contact details were messed up in the system and when they couldn't contact him by telephone they didn't even try sending a letter. He has melanoma and his diagnosis was delayed because of a black hole.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry you are worried about a mole that has changed.

I see you’ve been to your GP and had the mole assessed and have been referred to the hospital.

I’m not sure what else you can do to speed up your appointment other than trying to contact the dermatology clinic and ask if you could go on a cancellation list. They may contact you if a slot suddenly becomes available at short notice. But unfortunately this is not guaranteed.

There is always the option of going private . I'm afraid I don't know how much it would cost. But in most hospitals now there is a Private Patient's Officer who may be able to advise on this further. The Private Health website has information about private hospitals in the UK and may also be able to give you some idea.

I hope you know more soon and that everything turns out to be okay. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
