Cancer Scares and possible Cachexia

In May this year I was diagnosed with an, at the time, benign meningioma brain tumour.

I w had been taking HRT up until then for fatigue and brainfog and it really helped.

I stopped the HRT gradually over the next month or so after the diagnosis as it was recommended, and I was told there was a small risk it accelerate growth.

Within weeks the brainfog returned and I was struggling to do my job in IT application support. After searching on the internet I reverted to a Keto diet and Intermittent fasting. Which I have since found out can slow the growth of tumours too but bring on early onslaught of cachexia.

Yesterday I was referred on the urgent list to have a suspicious looking mole removed. I am told it is likely to take around 6 weeks to be done on the NHS and exploring private options via my Bupa cover looks no quicker.

In the last 3 months since reverting to Keto I have lost a lot of weight going from 11st 4 to 9st 8. 15% of my weight lost in 3 months. At 5ft 7 in height I am starting to look skeletal.

Yesterday I discovered what Cachexia is and found a link that suggested that this could be the cause of cachexia.

I spoke to Bupa and I am waiting for a triage call by midday for a one stop clinic to do tests to determine the cause of my weight loss. If I pass the thresholds on the Triage the test should be within 4 days. Worryingly this is via a bowel cancer clinic. I have no symptoms of bowel cancer apart from the weight loss.

I am 55 years old and show no symptoms of either the brain tumour or mole issues, both picked up by chance.  I was otherwise very healthy apart from menopause brainfog which HRT had addressed for the last 2 years.

I'm hoping the tests will be done in the next 4 days and I will get some answers and advice. But I know how slow health things can be and I didn't even mention my weight loss to the dermatologist yesterday as I didn't know Cachexia existed until I googled afterwards.

I am now worried sick that the Cachexia has been brought on by me adopting Keto - see beliw as to my reason why:

https://www.cancergrandchallenges.org/news/considering-the-bigger-picture-in-the-treatment-of-cancer-new-findings-from-the-team-taking-on

If it has then I'm equally concerned that it basically suggests that I may well have cancer.

I think I am going to adopt a high calorie high protein diet instead of Keto and hope if what I am reading is right it helps with the early onslaught Cachexia I suspect I have.

I have a 2.5 month old grandson living with me who I totally adore but who I am suddenly worried sick I may not be around to help support my son and his partner raise. The baby has digestion issues at the moment that they are struggling to cope with, so when Nanny helps out, who is less stressed from the 24x7 crying and feeds every 2-3 hours his parents are having to contend with he seems to settle for me.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice re my diet etc while I wait for medical advice I would be extremely grateful.

Many thanks,

  • Hi and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that you are having symptoms that are causing you concern and that you have been referred for a suspicious mole this must be a difficult time.

If you are concerned that you might have cachexia, the best person to discuss this with would be your doctor. Only a doctor who can assess you and refer you for any further tests can give you a diagnosis.

It is possible the weight loss you are experiencing could be due to changing your diet. Cachexia is very different to weight loss, it is a complex condition that can involve several organs and several systems in the body. The main symptoms are loss of weight including fat and muscle mass, loss of appetite, along with other symptoms such as anaemia and fatigue.

The exact causes of cachexia are unknown but it mostly affects people with advanced cancers or other illnesses such as heart disease and HIV. It is not thought to be caused by dieting.

The general recommendation is to have a healthy balanced diet. We cannot recommend a specific diet, this is something we would suggest speaking to your doctor about.

I hope you able to get some answers to your symptoms soon. If you would like to speak with one of nurses please feel free to call on 0808 800 4040 we are available between 9 am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Jemma
