Worried I have cancer?

Hi I’m worried I have some type of cancer. I’ve had a swollen lymph node/lump In my neck for a while when I first noticed it, I went to the doctors. I had a blood test done and they all came back normal. I noticed it again after it was swollen and painful and I’m itchy but not sure if that is because I am thinking about things. Would a blood test pick up what cancer the lump/ lymph node could be linked to? What should I say to my doctor?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I’m sorry you have a health worry.

There aren't any blood tests that give us a definite yes or no about cancer, but having blood results that are within the normal range is a good sign.

One of the most common reasons for a neck lump is infection even when you feel well. They can sometimes be felt for a long time after the infection has cleared and may never go back to their original size.

When you next see your doctor again you could say something like this: ‘I’m still worried about this neck lump. It’s been there for a while and feels swollen again. I’ve also been feeling itchy, and want to know if there’s anything else that needs to be checked’.

If necessary, your doctor may arrange some further tests.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you want to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Could itching be because of something else. I do currently have a tooth infection I’m not sure if it’s related to that?

  • Hi there and thanks for getting back in touch with us

I'm really sorry but we as there could be many things causing your itchy skin as mentioned on the NHS web pages we suggest you talk about this to your doctor when you next speak with them.

I hope you know more soon and that everything turns out okay for you.

    Take care

    Naomi
