Pain after FNA

Hi,

I have had a fine needle aspiration on a parotid gland. I had two needles inserted through the same puncture. No local anaesthetic was used.

I am in quite severe pain. The pain is sharp and there is often a further sharp, stabbing pain on top. It also feels like it is extending out of the lump and is in the ear and further down the cheek at times. I have taken paracetamol and ibuprofen, but it is still very uncomfortable. I have struggled to eat since due to the pain I am in. Talking is also very uncomfortable. I have tried using a hot water bottle but the weight of it on my skin wasn’t comfortable. Even touching the skin above it sends a sharp pain.

Is this level of pain and discomfort normal? Whilst I was expecting some discomfort, I have never felt a pain like this before. Nothing about such levels of pain (or any pain whatsoever) was mentioned when I had the procedure.

Many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear about the pain that you have experienced. If it hasn't settled down today then do get in touch with the team at the hospital or your GP to get their opinion. It is rare to have problems but if it continues to cause you pain it would probably be a good idea to let them know.

You could also try NHS111 if you are unable to get hold of any one.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

    Catherine
