Post menopausal bleeding .

Hi I am 64 and have been on hrt patches for 10 years. I am bleeding similar to a period. Could this be endometrial cancer?

  • Hello and thanks for posting

Vaginal bleeding after being on HRT for ten years isn’t normal and does need to be investigated. One possible cause could be the effects of the HRT itself, as it can sometimes lead to changes in the womb lining. As well as a thickened womb lining being a possible cause, other things like polyps in the cervix, fibroids or thinning or inflammation in the vagina can also cause bleeding. Or in rare cases endometrial cancer could be the cause.

I’m not sure if you’ve made an appointment to see your GP. Doctors usually refer post-menopausal women who experience vaginal bleeding urgently to the hospital for further investigations as cancer becomes a bit more of a possibility just because all cancers get more common as we age. So it is taken seriously and properly looked into but it can also have nothing to do with cancer.
