English patient in France

, I have an English friend who lives near Bordeaux she has cancerous polyps or nodes in her lung cavity and has been treated in France first with an immunotherapy drug and more recently with chemotherapy. She is very happy with the consultant and the treatment she has received in Bordeaux.

However, her 3 adult children live in London and want to bring her back to be treated here, closer to where they are. She has agreed to this.

Do you know the best hospital or the best consultant for lung cancers that I could suggest to them please?

And do you have any idea how they would manage the transfer from the French system to the UK one.

Thanks ... difficult situation. Hope it can be sorted.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your friend. This must be a difficult time for everyone involved.

I'm afraid we don't recommend individual hospitals or specialists. But any of the main hospitals in London should have the expertise to manage lung cancer patients.

I’m not sure when your friend was last in the UK and whether she had a GP (family doctor). If she did have one then it is important to contact them before she leaves France so that her doctors abroad can send all her medical information.

The GP would then be able to refer her to an oncologist ( cancer specialist) at a hospital near where she is going to be living. I'm not sure how long this process will take but hopefully by contacting the GP as soon as she can will hopefully speed this up this process. If you do not have a GP there is information on the NHS website on how to find a GP.

If your friend has lived outside the UK for a whiles she is not automatically entitled to NHS care unless she can demonstrate that she is coming back to the UK as a permanent resident. There is some information on our website about returning from living abroad that you may find useful to look at.

We also have information on our website on lung cancer  which you may find helpful.

I hope this is of some use. Please get back to us if you need any more information or support. You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene

  • Dear Celine  Thank you so much for your reply. I have passed on the information to her son and they will do whatever they can to ensure everything goes well for their Mum.
    Thank you again
