Abnormal periods

Im 35 F... So around may time my period was around 3 weeks late, I knew I wasn't pregnant so didn't give it too much thought. I then went on to have a few normal periods. Then I had one that started 2 weeks ago, I thought I was at the end of it but its just been really light the last week so it seems to have really dragged on. my last clear smear was 2 yrs ago, I had an ultrasound 2 yrs ago for an unrelated issues, all clear. I had low b12 3 years ago. had supplements for a few months and the follow up bloods where fine.

My health anxiety is insanely bad - my sister died of cervical cancer a few years ago, and the slightest thing I just think its going to be cancer - it's an uncontrollable fear. I just wonder how common this is. I know seeing. GP is the best option but how do I know when its at the point I should see a doctor?

  • It's always best to get checked but I hear you about the health anxiety. My partner has stage 4 melanoma so I imagine skin cancer everywhere. My parents have both had treated cancers so I always think it could be me and panic about my kids.

Irregular bleeding could be any number of things but I understand why you'd jump to that. I'm really sorry about your sister. I have two brothers and the thought of losing them prematurely...

Don't feel bad chasing it up but also mention your anxiety. A good doctor will do their best to reassure whilst taking your concerns seriously x

  • Hello Mallows06 and thank you for posting,

I am sorry to learn that your sister sadly died of cervical cancer, this must have been incredibly difficult for you and your family. I am also sorry to learn you are having symptoms that are causing you concern.

As Lynns21 has mentioned it is also best to get checked by your doctor. Only a doctor who can assess can say what the matter may be and refer you for any necessary tests. It is important to mean that there may be several reasons for your abnormal periods that are not necessarily cancer.

I hope you can get an appointment with your GP soon and tell them. It is important to let them know what it is you are concerned about and how anxious you are as they may be able to reassure you and help you to manage this.

Please come back to us if you need any further information or support

    Take care,

    Jemma
