Feeling anxious about the treatments back home

Hi,

i’ve signed in on behalf of my mum, who’s been diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer last September just a month before she turned 70. I’m hoping to gather more information on treatments and advice as she’s getting treatment outside the UK.

I just want to confirm if below treatments prescribed to her are similar to how we get treated here in the UK.

Her symptoms were blood in stool, constipation or diarrhea. She’s had colonoscopy, CT scan and MRI scan. 2 benign polyps had been removed but there was a cancerous tumor near her rectum and vaginal canal. The size was about half of the colon’s circumference.

So she’s been given oral medication and 28 days of Chemoradiation. After which, she needs to rest for 2-3 weeks before having an MRI scan. And then, possibly 4-5 sessions of Intravenous Chemotherapy every 21 days. Then another MRI scan before scheduling her Colorectal surgery.

Thank you.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your mum's diagnosis. This must be a difficult time for you all.

As information nurses not involved in your mum's care, we cannot give a medical opinion. But from what you have described, the treatment plan she has been given seems in line with treatment in the UK for rectal cancer depending on the stage (extent) of her cancer and her general health.

You can read more about rectal cancer and possible treatments on our website.

I hope this helps. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
