Oesophageal cancer Stage 3

Hi my sister has just had her chemotherapy (Flot) stopped due to being unable to cope with the side effects and after speaking with an acute chemo nurse. She has an appointment with her consultant in 2 weeks but knows for certain she won’t be having anymore chemo and the oesophagectomy isn’t an option. What other options are there? I would just like an idea so I can be a little prepared. Many thanks

  • Hello and thanks for posting

I'm sorry to read about your sister's situation. This must be an incredibly difficult time for you all.

As nurses, we don't recommend treatment as this needs to come from your sister's specialist team as they are familiar with all her medical details.

However, as further chemotherapy and surgery are not an option for her, the aim of treatment is likely to focus on controlling the cancer, to improve her quality of life and manage any symptoms she may be experiencing.

You can read more about treatment for advanced oesophageal on our website.

I wonder if your sister has a Macmillan nurse involved in her care. Their area of expertise is managing cancer symptoms and they also offer emotional support. If your sister would like access to this service then the hospital or GP can refer her.

I hope this is of some help. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Celene
