Ascites

Hi...I have always had a large stomach and I am overweight but recently I've been gaining weight for no reason as I have not been eating any differently. I have been having stabbing pains in my stomach and I have bouts of diarrhoea, which I have thought was IBS. When I am in bed at night I get a strange bubbling like feeling under my left breast.

My sister passed away from primary peritoneal cancer and I am aware that fluid retention was something she suffered from.

I am worried that I do have fluid in my abdomen.

Kind regards

  • Hello Gaynor and thanks for your post,

I am sorry to hear that you are worried about your health.

We can't diagnose why you are getting these symptoms so if you haven't made an appointment with your GP then it would be a good idea to do so.

You may find it helpful to look at this link on how to get the most from your GP appointment.

Diet plays a huge part on how our body works. You may find it helpful to keep a food diary so the doctor can see if there are any triggers that may be affecting your bowels.

The NHS have produced some information on eating a healthy diet called Eat well.

Try not to overthink it for know but do make an appointment with your GP. I am sure that if they felt that you needed further tests they would organise them for you.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then do get back to us or give us a ring. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

    Catherine
