I'm scared. I have no one to talk too

I am frozen. I am due to go to the clinic on Thursday.

  • What are you going for ? It's a scary time waiting for results but once you know for sure, it'll be easier to get your head around. X

  • Without knowing your details, all I can give is my experience. I had a mammogram re-call and that alone scared the hell out of me. I had another mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and then a wait for the results. I literally thought I would implode with anxiety. Once I got my cancer result I relaxed. It's much easier when you have all the information. Take someone with you, it helps and they hear things we don't. I had a 22mm invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 2. Lumpectomy, 5 days of radiotherapy and 5 years of hormone blocking tablets as my tumour was fed by oestrogen. There are so many treatments these days and it's not all bad news. I won't say don't worry as that's impossible. A lot of breast cancers are slow growing so it won't be spreading all over while you wait for results. Anxiety will make you feel every ache, pain, tight chest, headache, is signs it's all over your body. It's not, that's just your anxiety. I hope you get good results, it could be a cyst or anything. I have my fingers crossed for you.

  • Thank you this information is very useful. One of my colleagues came to stay with me yesterday as started throwing up. Another has offered to go with me to the brest surgery on Thursday. They both had cancer which has been successfully treated. So I am just trying to be balanced.

  • Hi there and thanks for reaching out to us

I am sorry to hear you have an appointment coming up at the breast unit and appreciate what an anxious time this can be.

It is good to hear you have some supportive work colleagues to help you through this time of uncertainty and hopefully you will know more very soon.

Times like this are unsettling and the mind can go into over drive, imagining all sorts of things but distraction and having others around you to talk to and give you some perspective can really help.

Try and keep your mind busy and occupied with other things over the next few days to pass the time. Make sure to look after yourself by eating a balanced diet, getting some exercise and ensuring a good bedtime routine to enable quality sleep.

Avoid googling and wait and see what the doctors have to say at your appointment, it will only be then when hopefully you will know more and find out what needs to happen next.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes

    Naomi

  • Thank you Naomi, you are absolutely correct in that my mind has gone into overdrive. Makes it even worse I am a nurse by profession.
