Radiotherapy following radical prostatectomy

Hi

My husband commence radiotherapy following a radical prostatectomy yesterday. He is very anxious and says his bladder is irritating. Can this happen after only one dose?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Lorraine and thank you for your post

I am sorry to hear about your husband's recent surgery and the symptoms he is currently experiencing.

Side effects usually begin one to two weeks after radiotherapy starts. However, each person experiences side effects differently, and some may notice them sooner.

Does your husband have a nurse specialist he can speak with? As it is also important to check if there might be another reason for these symptoms, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI).

I hope you find this information useful.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Tina

  • Hi Tina,

thank you for your reply. He has spoken to the team at the hospital. They also agree with you that it’s too soon to be a radiation side effect. He is going to keep an eye on it
