Concerned about lung cancer symptoms

My fiancée who is 55 and has smoked most of his adult life has symptoms of lung cancer, we both stopped smoking last year but sadly he has started again. He has had a cough for several weeks, is quite often breathless and has a painful shoulder, he tries to hide the fact that he is smoking but I know he is and he refuses to visit his G P , I’m very worried but feel completely powerless as he won’t seek help.

  • Hi there and thanks for getting in touch

I am sorry to hear your fiancée has some symptoms that are worrying you.

It is very difficult to make someone seek out medical advice if they don't want to and that is their choice, i'm afraid to say. However I would encourage you to try and let him know how concerned you are about his health and that you would really like him to see the doctor, for your peace of mind and see what he says.

Failing that I am wondering if there is any other family members or friends that your fiancée is close to who may be willing to speak with him as well.

I hope he plucks up the courage to seek out medical advice and that everything turns out okay.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best
