Elective hysterectomy

Is it possible to request an elective total hysterectomy does anyone know? I am told I will need tamoxifen for 10 years now and no plans to have any more children so would it be possible to just ask to have it all removed and remove uterine risks associated with tamoxifen?

  • Hello Macaroni and thanks for your post,

I don't think that it would be possible to request a hysterectomy but of course you could discuss this with your Breast Care nurse or Oncologist.

An elective hysterectomy may be offered when a woman has been shown to have the BRCA gene. You can read more about  inherited genes on our website.

We have some information on our website about Tamoxifen. As you can see in the side effects they say that womb cancer is not common with taking Tamoxifen but of course if you do have any bleeding that is not expected then do let your GP know.

There have many studies looking at the benefits of taking Tamoxifen which you might find helpful to read. Do discuss your concerns with your GP / team at the hospital and hopefully they will be able to help reassure you.

If you would like to talk any of this through with one of the helpline nurses then you are welcome to give us a ring.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    All the best,

    Catherine
