brain secondaries

I have a rare form oof breast cancer that has spread to my chest, adrenal gland and brain. They said they woukd do radiotherapy on the brain first but it's taken weeks, now they say it has spread too much so they are not doing the radiotherapy they think it's more important to start chemo for the rest of the body. I'm so worried though about the brain and how it's going to affect me.

  • Hi Greatgrandma, sorry to hear that you now have secondary breast cancer, it must be such a worrying time for you. Although I have no experience of what you are going through, I thought I'd leave you a message, to put your post back to first page.p Hopefully, others going through secondary breast cancer will get in touch to share their experiences. Good luck with your chemo and I hope you don't have to wait too long to get started. Xx

  • Hi there Greatgrandma and thanks for the post

I am so sorry to hear about your situation, it sounds like this is a very difficult time for you.

To be told you are no longer suitable to have radiotherapy to the brain must have been upsetting to hear.

Unfortunately as no one here is involved in your direct care it is difficult for us to comment too much into your situation and what all this may mean for your future. I suggest you ask to speak with your specialist doctor or nurse if you have one to talk this through and gain a greater understanding of what the future, long and short term may look like for you.

We have a section about secondary brain cancer on our website so do take a look. I'm afraid as everyone is different it is difficult for anyone to predict how these brain metastases (mets) may affect you or the symptoms they may cause in the future. It will depend on the size of them, how fast they grow and how they may respond to any treatment ( as and when this is possible, and as you are probably aware it is difficult for chemotherapy drugs to pass the blood brain barrier, which means these are difficult to treat).

I hope you are able to start your chemotherapy soon and that you are able to get some clarification from your team.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Wishing you all the best

    Take care

    Naomi
