Dad diagnosed and needs full larynx and some lymph nodes removed

My lovley Dad (84) has just been told today he needs this huge op...but before he does , he needs a PET scan to figure out what the mass in his lung is. Mum is beside herself with worry, as am I. Is there any way to prepare him fot this and also to prepare my poor wee mum? We feel at a total loss and I'm struggling to keep everyone positive.

  • Hello there and thank you for posting

I am sorry to hear about your dad's situation and appreciate what an anxious time this must be for you all.

It sounds like you are doing your best to support your parents at this time but we also have some information about supporting someone with cancer on our website.

At the best of times it is difficult to know how to best prepare for surgery, let alone unsettling needing to wait for this pet scan to determine what this mass might be on your dad's lung. This can't be an easy time for you.

We always suggest that patients and their loved one's try and take things one step and day at a time, trying to think about everything all at once can be overwhelming. Until the results are in I doubt the doctors can say much more, so hang in there and try not to over think things until you have all the facts.

There is a section about types of surgery for laryngeal cancer as well as information about prehabilitation on our web pages that encourages patients to best prepare for cancer treatment by improving their diet, activity and exercise levels and mental health.

Once the doctors have all the information I am sure they will sit down and discuss these with your dad. At this time there should be a time to ask any questions to get a better understanding about what needs to happen next.

Do also reach out to cancer support centres such as Maggie's who can also support patients and their loved one's emotional and psychological support if needed.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care

    Naomi
