Colposcopy Today

Hi all!

I’m new here. I’ve just had a colposcopy due to heavy postcoital bleeding. I’m on the mini pill and don’t ever get periods. There were CIN 2 cells present but I am HPV negative. Is this quite unusual considering I do not have HPV? They took biopsies to send to the lab but I am feeling a bit anxious. I also had a cervical ectropion that was treated today. Any insight or advice would be so appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Hello and thank you for posting,

I can appreciate it is confusing to be HPV-negative and have CIN2

CIN 2 is caused by HPV. There is no treatment for HPV, the body's immune system will get rid of the HPV but this can take up to 2 years. It is possible that when you were tested, although HPV had caused the cell changes, it wasn't picked up because your immune system had already got rid of it. It is best to clarify this with the team at the hospital if possible or perhaps speak with your GP as they will know your situation.

Waiting for biopsy results can be an anxious time, but it is important to know that abnormal cells are not the same as cervical cancer. If left untreated there is a risk that some abnormal cells will develop into cervical cancer in the future but this can take a long time, years.

I hope this helps a little and you can get more clarification about your situation.
